The One Year Old Classroom is an extension of the Infant Room; a soothing environment with defined, secured and open areas for playing, eating, and changing diapers.
The classroom includes a block area, a dramatic play area, a science area, a library, and an arts area. At the beginning of each day, during what's called free play time, children decide which area to play in.
All furniture is child-sized, sturdy, and safe.
The environment is rich-print and has pictures of the children’s family at eye level.
Time is typically set aside to read a variety of books to the children and a variety of diverse board books are accessible to them throughout the day.
Diapers are checked every 45 to 60 minutes, changed and documented.
During mealtimes, children self- feed to the extent that they are able. They are encouraged, but never forced, to try a variety of foods. Menus for the month are posted in the classroom on the Parent Info Bulletin Board.
The children are encouraged to take a nap and/or rest after lunch time. Cots and blankets are set out during this time.
The curriculum invites exploration through teacher-child interactions and stimulating activities.
